This is still the only academic book I have written that has received so much attention across South Africa and around the world. It is an emotional story about the intertwined lives of the first Black Dean of Education at the University of Pretoria and his white Afrikaans students. I came to my leadership role in this bastion of apartheid as critical, judgmental and firm in my resolve to change them all; but the more I worked with these young people, the more I became aware of our mutual vulnerability in the wake of our devastating past. I would come to embrace them as my own.
